ISDE 2008 Submit was Successfully Held in Germany

ISDE 2008 Submit was successfully held in Potsdam, Germany from 12th to 14th November, 2008.
This submit focuses on the theme of Geoinformatics: Tools for Global Change Research with seven main topics. They are Global Change, Desertification, Urbanization, Observation and Modelling, Simulation and Modelling, Visualization and Spatial Data Infrastructure. With the development of digital earth theory and technology, digital earth, as a burgeoning intercross discipline combined geosciences, space science and information science and technology, has developed in abroad research fields, especially global change. Scientists in the research field of digital earth gathered in Potsdam to discuss the role of digital earth science and technology, especially geoinformatics in global change issues, which has significant meanings.
At the opening ceremony, Mr. Jann Jakobs, the mayor of Potsdam addressed keynote speech. Prof. Manfred Ehlers briefed the aims and meanings of this ISDE summit. Prof. Guo Haudong, the Secretary-General of ISDE introduced the development of ISDE and read out the congratulatory letter from Prof. Lu Yongxiang, the president of ISDE. President Lu said, “We must realize that global change is a global challenge, which could not be addressed without the integration of a vast range of regional and global information in various aspects of the Earth and the application of relevant technologies. Digital earth is such a powerful response to this global initiative as characterized by the global coverage data of a variety of spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions, by the geographic information systems and broadband network communication technology, and by the application of digital earth technology into social and environmental issues. ... this summit, gathering scientists working on digital earth and geoinformatics research to discuss global change issues, has significant meanings."  
During the summit, scientists and scholars reported their research on the role of digital earth science and technology in global change research. Content covers a wide range of topics, for example geoinformatics, the influence of observation and modeling technology in desertification, the support of simulation and modeling using geo-browser to land degradation policy, and the global change in 20th and 21st century. The following are some to brief.     
Prof. Michael Goodchild, Member of the US National Academy of Sciences presented a keynote speech, entitled "Simulation, Modelling and Digital Earth: Status and Prospects". His presentation indicated that "the original Gore speech on Digital Earth emphasized being able to visualize the future, but to date none of the DE prototypes include substantial simulation capabilities".  Goodchild explores "what Gore meant, the set of processes that might reasonably be modeled, and the technical issues involved in embedding simulations in a DE platform." He also believes that "the Gore vision remains a powerful concept for engaging citizens in what is known about the planet’s future." Goodchild’s presentation got attendees' full concerns and discussion.
Prof. Guo Huadong presented on behalf of Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth, CAS. His speech title is " ABCC Program: Global Change Study Using Space Technology ". ABCC Program is initiated by Chinese Academy of Sciences with the collaboration of Australia, Brazil, Canada and China. Prof. Guo’s speech mainly focuses on the role of geo-spatial information technology in the global change research, and emphasizes the value and meanings of geo-spatial information technology in developing parallel research with similar geographic environment backgrounds, like ABCC Program does.
Prof. Li Deren, the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a speech, entitled "Role of Geospatial Technology in Wenchuan Earthquake". The report mainly focused the role of geo-spatial information technology in earth quake disaster resistance and alleviation with the background of Wenchuan Earthquake in China on 12 May. The report pointed out that "It is important to develop a national disaster rapid response system that corroborates the work by different agencies and facilitates data and resources sharing." Meanwhile, Prof. Li emphasized the necessity of the international cooperation in spatial information science and technology.
There are nearly 120 researchers from 15 countries attended this submit. Totally 64 articles and abstracts were submitted to this submit and about 50 authors gave a presentation concerning their articles and posters at the summit.
After the successful 2006 ISDE Summit in New Zealand, Prof. Manfred Ehlers, as an ISDE EC member applied to host this 2008 summit on the 2nd ISDE EC meeting. 2008 ISDE Summit is another successful meeting that ISDE convened, which indicates the spread and sustainable development of digital earth concept around the world, and paves a way to the 6th International Symposium on Digital Earth in Beijing in 2009.
