Congratulations! ISDE Honorary President Huadong Guo was Appointed as ISC Fellow

On 5 December 2022, ISDE Honorary President, Prof. Huadong Guo was announced as one of 60 new ISC Fellows at a special event of the International Science Council (ISC), on the eve of the World Science Forum in Cape Town, South Africa.

Nominated by President of the ISC Committee on Data (CODATA) and President of International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), Prof. Guo was appointed by the ISC Foundational Fellowship Council from the nominees of a very high standard. The ISC Fellowship is the highest honor that can be conferred on an individual by the ISC, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to promoting science as a global public good.

Prof. Guo is an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of TWAS, and a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters. He is a prominent scientist known for his work in remote sensing science, and interdisciplinary, international cooperation. He is a recipient of the ISC Science for Sustainability Award and is serving on the ISC Global Commission on Science Missions for Sustainability and President of ISC-China. He was appointed as a member of the UN 10-Member Group to support TFM for SDGs appointed by the UN Secretary-General and has actively contributed to and participated in international efforts towards sustainability. He was one of the founders of ISDE, President of ISDE (2015-1019), and currently Honorary President of ISDE (2019-). He is a leading voice developing Big Earth Data science and applying it to facilitate SDGs from global to local scales through data-driven methods.

This is the second cohort of ISC Fellows (first 66 Fellows were appointed in June 2022). The ISC Fellows includes eminent social and natural scientists, engineers and thought-leaders who have made impactful contributions in the science-policy sphere.  They hail from different countries and regions, disciplines, sectors and career stages; having been nominated by ISC Members, Governing Board and Fellowship Council members, and sister networks like the Global Young Academy and InterAcademy Partnership.  The three outgoing ISC patrons – Mary Robinson, Ismail Serageldin and Vint Cerf – have been awarded Honorary Fellowship status, in special recognition of their outstanding support to ISC.

It is anticipated that the ISC Fellows will support ISC in its vital mission to bring science to society and help address urgent societal problems – such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, water, energy and food security, as well as urgent transformations required in research itself.
