ISDE President Alessandro Annoni was interviewed as a representative of international organizations by China Media Group Mobile at 2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum held from 20th to 23rd May, 2023 in Guangzhou, China.
In his interview, he showed special interest in the word “Science” in the name of the Forum, deemed it an explicit reference to the need to advance science for the benefit of the entire society, which vision in his opinion is also what the ISDE as an international society is striving for. He then shared his prospects for Digital Earth and digital technologies by restating the concept that “Digital Earth is basically a digital replica of our planet in which we can embed all the data and knowledge that is available, and run some simulation to see which are the impact of our activities.” He took digital cities which are connected by the Internet of Things as an example and listed its benefits such as managing the transport in the cities, and optimizing the planning of the city.
When it came to the popular virtual reality in the video game industry, he firmly believed that once people were immersed in such an almost real-life virtual world thanks to technologies like gamifications and extended reality and saw the damage they did to the planet, they would definitely be shocked and change their behaviors. He pointed out that ISDE has a 360-degree perspective, so it is not looking into a single technology but the world technology together. With a good understanding of both negative and positive impacts of these technologies, the ISDE in his view is playing a unique role in mitigating and avoiding the negative impacts.
Annoni was invited to deliver an opening address at the Forum opening ceremony and make a keynote speech at the Session on Information and Communications of "Exploring Futuristic Information Technologies, Igniting the Future of Communications" with the title of "Technology Contribution to Sustainable Development - The Case of Digital Earth".
