The 2nd Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation Successfully Concluded

The 2nd Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation ended successfully on February 28, 2024, with results that thought-provoking. Notably, this event was hosted by the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), and organized by with the International Society for Digital Earth - Young Scientist Innovation Network. The lecture audience was introduced to the theme of "Smartification in the Digital and Virtual Space" by two speakers. They delved into significant concepts such as the digital transformation, smartification process and cyber-physical space. These presentations provided a unique perspective on the intelligence enhancement in the digital and virtual realm.

Dr. Stefano Nativi, the head of a research unit on geospatial information science at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), gave a lecture themed “Digital Transformation and the Smartification Process”. He highlighted the importance of cyber-physical interconnections and the adoption of a Risk-Based Approach by the European Union. The ultimate goal is to achieve a seamless interaction between humans and machines in Web 4.0, fostering innovation and safety. He calls for essential shifts in three models such as the value-chain, promoting a transition towards a digital ecosystem. This leads to an enhanced digital transformation, creating a collaborative and interconnected landscape with transformative impacts on industries and sectors.

Dr. Xintao Liu, an associate professor at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, engrossed the audience with a presentation themed “Exploring Human Activity Patterns in a Hybrid Cyber-Physical Space”, and he presented his research results to us in his presentation. First, he enumerated the change from physical to cyber space in four ways. He then described his three research objectives, i.e. to explore the features of cyber space and human activities, to understand the relations between cyber space and urban environment, and to quantify the relation between physical and cyber space from the perspective of complexity science.

The International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) is a non-governmental international academic organization to disseminate the vision of Digital Earth and the mission of benefiting society by promoting the development and realization of Digital Earth. The International Society for Digital Earth - Young Scientist Innovation Network (ISDE-YSIN) aims to promote the development of crucial concepts and innovative technologies of the Digital Earth and to support young scientists to contribute in the fields of earth observation, big earth data, the Sustainable Development and other significant scientific areas. The overall goal of ISDE-YSIN is to focus on serving innovation and development in the field of Digital Earth, unite young scientists and support their academic innovation, as well as organizing international academic events involving young scientists.

The Network will organize the International Society for Digital Earth - Lecture on the Digital Earth Youth Innovation quarterly each year, aiming to invite the world-leading scientists and rising young scientists to share their cutting-edge research outcomes and enhance the connection and research collaboration among YSIN members and beyond.
