Dr. Artak Piloyan is the Acting Head of the Chair of Cartography and Geomorphology at Yerevan State University (YSU), Faculty of Geography and Geology, a position he has held since 2023. He holds a Doctoral degree in Geography and has more than 17 years of professional and academic experience in GIScience, Remote Sensing, geospatial data infrastructures (NSDI/INSPIRE), thematic mapping, and Digital Earth applications for environmental management, disaster risk reduction, urban informatics, and sustainable development.
Dr. Piloyan has played a key role in numerous international and donor-funded projects, including EU Erasmus+ (GeoTAK, GIDEC), COST, GIZ (TCCA-RA) and APPEAR (DEvision), with a strong focus on Digital Earth, NSDI/INSPIRE, and geospatial capacity building. He has extensive experience in curriculum modernization at YSU, introducing new bachelor’s and master’s programs in geoinformatics, remote sensing, and spatial data science. Alongside teaching, he has organized training sessions and workshops in Armenia and abroad, supporting capacity development across diverse sectors.
From March 2019 to February 2020, Dr. Piloyan served as Head of the Cartography and Geodesy Department at the Cadastre Committee of Armenia, where he demonstrated his leadership and management skills in overseeing critical projects. Throughout his career, he has also gained work experience in multiple countries, including Armenia, Austria, Czechia, Georgia, Germany, Moldova, Russia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, which has strengthened his cross-cultural collaboration and adaptability.
